I guess the other thing to remember is that you and I watch a movie and it's a movie - we might agree with the ideas presented, we might not, we might take different things from it, but we're not veiwing every movie through the lens of a culture war and persecution complex to figure out whether it's attacking or validating us personally right?
Not so much with the fash. And thus when they find something that can be held as supporting their ideas, they skullfuck it very hard.
I don't think most American directors are trying to make fascist propaganda. I think they're Americans, who grew up in a stew of fascist propaganda, and when they tell American stories that comes out. Mostly. There are a couple who might definitely be doing it on purpose.
Take for example, Starship Troopers. The base material is unquestionably fascist, written by a fascist. The movie is inarguably a subversion of fascism via rug-pulling; the director himself says this is quite intentional - he wanted to see if he could make you think fascism was sexy, and generate the emotional impact as more of the curtain gets revealed and you realize you've been rooting for the fascists because of xenophobia and cultural ques. @SordidAmok That's the thing tho - they're not not getting it. They're saying "stop laughing, that's how it should be you swine"
But once all that happened, it got released into an American culture where, a certain percentage of the audience didn't even CARE that it was satire - they agreed with the Nazis. And were excited to see people on screen who thought like they did. They were thrilled by "sexy fascism" not appalled.
To this day that's a movie i don't want to watch with people I don't trust, because if they don't "get it" I might have a problem on my hands.
After watching the series version of "The Man In The High Castle", there was one scene where one of the antagonist characters, a Nazi from the USA, was in Germany and given honours from the Nazi Governing Assembly.
I can't help but think that Musk watched that scene and was replaying it in his head when he made that Nazi salute. :|
