I know why they're doing this, I agree with their objectives (curing invariably fatal neurodegenerative diseases), but even so I am adamantly of the opinion that for-profit research using this methodology should be illegal. Moral intuition calls them corpse molestors even though it's for a good and socially useful goal.
@cstross nope nope nope nope nope. any more of this kind of thing and i'll take myself off the organ donor list. this should be so completely illegal that even investors would be imprisoned.

They're alive enough that they require anaesthesia on the off chance they might regain consiousness. How is this remotely ethical?
@cstross Are you also against people willing their bodies to medical schools so that medical students can dissect them? If science could use my brain for good, they can have it.
@Felila The difference here is that cadavers used in medical schools are definitely dead. This experimentation messes around with our definition of brain death, which is deeply disturbing.
@cstross If one of my organs could be transplanted and save someone, that would be OK. If one of my organs could be kept alive and studied, that would be OK. Note that I may have an odd take on things because I'm a Buddhist, which is an anatman (no soul) tradition. No Abrahamic focus on corpses.

That fucking terrifies me - imagine a black nothing void, and you just sitting there. No senses, just existence. Possibly random sensations, maybe agony, maybe fear, as the experiment proceeds. For days, weeks, months

@cstross There was a really interesting article in Science News about researchers that were re-inflating pig brains. The vascular system is very tricky but they got it to work with the brain inverted. Instruments started suggesting the brain was 'waking up' and they stopped their research for ethical reasons.
