@RolloTreadway @DJDarren I once made a vegan Italian meringue using aquafaba. It was an interesting process, taught me a few things about food science and I'm glad I did it to learn how the process worked, but it took three extremely time consuming attempts and made an inordinate amount of washing up for something that tasted no better than a dessert I could buy.
I feel much the same way about fixing computers.
@afewbugs As for computers, though: I take an almost perverse pleasure in getting shitty old hardware up and running on modern software.
Big Tech wants us to scrap old computers, and damn the environment, but to them I say "NAY SIR!", and once again install a Linux on an old PC I have no practical use for, but can't stand the idea of scrapping.
@DJDarren @RolloTreadway there is a very satisfying "fuck you I won't do what you tell me!" feeling to sticking things to consumer capitalism by fixing things you're "supposed" to replace isn't there. I feel the same way about growing plants. "Mwahahah, with just some soil, sunshine and water watch these plants make EVEN MORE PLANTS! I can give them away to everyone around me and I'll still have EXACTLY THE SAME NUMBER OF PLANTS! Take that scarcity mindset, right in your zero sum game!"

I remember a few years ago the reaction of someone when they discovered a friend had grown plants from the dried beans she'd bought in the supermarket.
"You're allowed to do that ?"

Not if the makers of GM seeds have anything to do with it. 😐
The ancient practice of "farm saved seeds" being used for the next year's crops is being eroded by legal moves from the seed vendors. They want royalties for any seed controlled by their patents that is carried forward to the next year.
In yet another landmark example of the perpetual money-grab, I believe this even applies to GM seed donated as aid to famine-stricken regions of the world.
