Today, Amazon effectively kills support for older Kindles. Not because the screens stopped working. Not because the batteries all died. Because Amazon decided perfectly usable e-readers should be cut off from the services that made them useful. That is not innovation. That is forced obsolescence with a checkout button. Sign PIRG’s petition and tell Amazon to stop bricking working Kindles.

@iFixit I never understood why I should pay for a product which technically won’t be mine at all and is already financed by advertising an selling my data. „Smart“ in smart products always means: we will ripp you off.
@netzradler @iFixit my current setup - which works wonderfully: buy books on Kobo’s store, remove DRM, convert them in Calibre, sideload them to my Kindle and basically keep the device offline - forever. Working pretty well ATM 🤗 (sounds more complicated than it actually is - pretty fast and smooth)
@_elena @netzradler @iFixit it’s exactly my setup except I jailbroke the Kindle and keep it connected so I can pass books from Calibre via wi-fi. Auto update is blocked. Whenever this will stop working, I will buy a Kobo
