Alright, I reinstalled my PC (with Mint this time). I haven't tested everything, but so far the good news is that Beeper is working with Mint (it didn't with Ubuntu) but I can't figure out how to type in Japanese. I downloaded a bunch of things (fctix?) it tells me that it's working (i.e. I can switch the input method) except that... nope... it's Roman alphabet and only Roman alphabet.
Okay, I'm tired, I'm going to bed.
@David I feel for you, installing Japanese keyboard is tricky on any Linux distro. I already did it twice and it was a nightmare both times. Good luck and if anyone tells you "dude that’s so easy", just ignore them
@Bilb0k3t Strangely, it was very easy with Ubuntu, and it even worked better than on Windows (I could type in kana without trying to remember the JP keyboard layout, I have a French keyboard).
@David The great thing about Linux Mint is that in the Language Settings, they give you explicit instructions on how to set up typing in Japanese. Setting things up to ensure that Japanese kanji are properly displayed is a bit of a battle, though.
@DrEvanGowan I followed the instructions and... Nothing happened... 🤷♂️
@David That is strange. I had no problems.
@DrEvanGowan I'll check again, but nothing happened, basically. There is a tiny keyboard icon in the bottom right. If I right click on it, I get a bunch of settings that don't do much. If I left click on it, a small message briefly tells me "Japanese input" except that nothing changes.
