Listening to Radio 4 whilst dropping 19 to work this morning and there was an article about social media damaging relationships and our ability to form connections with other people - making us lonelier and less connected. And the whole time I was thinking..... that's not social media you're describing. It is Instagram. It has not been my experience of Fedi, at all. Which continues to be a source of connection and conversation and friendship.

@TheBreadmonkey Conversations feel more genuine here, like how early networks used to be. Sich a welcome change from the relentless optimisation for likes and clickbait and AI slop.
@TheBreadmonkey What does 'dropping 19 to work' mean? Are you a bus driver?
@jtb HAHAHA. I mean my 19 year old. I don't want to use her name (although I'm sure I probably have before). Don't know what to call her. Daughter I suppose would make more sense.
The clue is in the word media. Fedi isn’t media.
@TheBreadmonkey a bit like how 'the internet' = 'the web' now in every day terms and 'the web' = a handful of SaaS that people have accounts on and not the rest of it.
@TheBreadmonkey Twitter in the beginning was the same, even Facebook let you connect with friends and family. My son uses Discord and in game chat to connect. Now Mastodon is one of the last bastions of social social media, the rest turning into algorithms and ads. It’s now the only one I use regularly.
@TheBreadmonkey the fediverse is… different.
@TheBreadmonkey
Someone pointed out a while back that we used to talk about "social networking" sites .. then "social media" took over. "Media" in the modern world sadly does have those overtones of being force-fed algorithmic slop stripped of authentic human connection. I like to think of the fediverse as an old school "social networking" platform.
