I've been thinking a little bit and I've come to the conclusion that I should do more to try and get people away from evil billionaire-controlled fascism-capitalism-promoting manipulative corporate social media. I'd like to make a private Fediverse account in addition to this one and the long term goal should be that I get some of my family and real life friends to make accounts too so we can post the kind of stuff people posted on Facebook around 2010 and share some nice moments of our lives. In the perfect scenario, they would also find some public accounts that are interesting to them and find that the Fediverse works for them as a substitute for the advertisement-influencer-soaked corporate platforms. I already convinced my brother to make a Fediverse account, I think he's most open to the idea among my friends and family.

Now the question is, which entrypoint to the Fediverse we should use.
1. Mastodon offers, I think, the most polished experience and has the most interesting public accounts. It is however mostly text-based and (at least the people I know) are mostly used to Instagram nowadays so the text-based experience might feel a bit foreign to them.
2. Pixelfed is most similar to Instagram. I made a test account earlier today but I didn't find a way to post for followers only. Did I miss this functionality (maybe its just not possible in the F-Droid app I was trying out) or is it not possible?
3. Friendica is supposed to be similar to Facebook, so maybe most suitable for what I imagine? However Facebook is so uncool nowadays that I don't want to turn off people by suggesting them a Facebook substitute, which has a very boomer vibe today.
Do you have any suggestions? Do you have experience with inviting real life contacts to the Fediverse?
@jdw Have you also seen https://about.fedibook.net/the-fedibook-project/ https://fedibook.net ?
Might be worth checking out!
As for inviting real life contacts, not quite. I have shared https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/fediverse-an-overview-for-government-agencies/ with two government agencies a while back, with no success.
(And I've made more onboarding materials and tools, if you're interested: https://stefanbohacek.com/tag/fediverse/.)
@stefan No, I hadn't heard about fedibook, I'll check it out! Also your blog posts are very nice, what a shame that the government agencies were too inert to take an action.
@jdw Thank you!
Yeah, this was a little while ago, I think the next big Mastodon update with the option to follow an account via email might make it a bit more interesting to agencies and organizations, so I might just reach out again!
