I was livestreaming to a friend yesterday to explain the Fediverse. tubefree.org/w/kF5XSffqNr13x... if you'd care to watch.

And while he's a VERY technical person, he's struggling to understand the AP connectivity. I totally understand, because I had 0 clue how it works initially either.

One of the things he mentioned was seeing "Sign-Up" or "Login" made thim think he needed yet ANOTHER sign up for a new platform.

We are changing the game so fundamentally that we have to overcome 20+ years of bullshit.

THIS is literally what we're trying to solve. And I think we struggling with wording that indicate we're different, but similar.

I've been calling the #Fediverse #smallSocial instead of #socialNetwork or #socialMedia .

I was wondering if folks had any thoughts on how we can change "Sign-Up" or "Login" to let folks know if you have a Fedi account you do NOT need to sign up for another platform.

Thoughts?

@ozoned such a tough question, my spouse brought it up in a different way looking at FediProfile, pointing out the two-step “enter you Mastodon server” then “authorize “ was a bit more friction than needed.

And it’s further confusing that we may need multiple accounts, depending on what we want to do. But read-only or read-mostly users do have a challenge with the different architectures, for sure.

@johannab@cosocial.ca Oh this is absolutely 100% marketing. But we can come up with our own language. We don't have a marketing department. 😁 But neither did the internet originally. We had to cretae words for this and then organically spread that.

I personally learned things like LOL and BRB via IRC channels.

Did your friend bother to --> try < -- the "Signup" or "Login" process?

Every time I've seen that it auto-fills with the user name and instance that whatever I'm using already knows I'm homed on and signed-in to

Perhaps he needs a different "app"...

Have the "Sign-Up" or "Login" or "Sign In" or whatever. You click that and then it lets you know that if you already have a Fediverse account, you can follow from there.
