Has anyone done a proper study of how much productivity is *lost*, globally, due to ridiculous jankyness of "enterprise" software?
Billions of people dealing everyday with having to re-type long poorly implemented forms, decade-old bugs. random crashes, cloud outages.
Surely this is an interesting thing to measure?
@rysiek There is a 1996 book, “The Trouble with Computers” by Landauer that discusses this in detail. He mentions many problems but “targets individuals utility and usability as the main culprits”. The first chapter describes what evidence was available.
AFAIK nothing has changed qualitatively but the book was ignored and I am unaware of any more recent data.

@rysiek im not sure how one would measure it, exactly.
ideally you would need a control, but we don’t have one.
@rysiek Every corpo I worked at in the last 15 years assessed how much benefit there would be in fixing or automating software quite frequently. Turns out office clerks in Eastern Europe and South East Asia cost less than software development, at least by the next financial quarter.
@rysiek depending on how you count productivity that actually is a net increase, as more people are occupied for longer (e.g. GDP)
