Unfortunately, LaTeX is full of leaky abstractions that mean you periodically have to write TeX. And you discover Knuth was the kind of person who looked at. Turing machine and said ‘that’s a great programmer abstraction!’. I am very happy SILE exists, as a clean reimplementation of the algorithms in the TeX papers, I just wish it had more ecosystem support.
