One of my linguistic pet-peeve is when Americans (it's always Americans) confuse "code-switching" and "style-shifting."
So, as a reminder, code-switching is changing languages mid-sentence (or at least mid-conversation) when two speakers are multilingual.
What they call "code-switching" is "style-shifting" that is adapting your English to the social context. For example, when a Black person speaks standard US English with White people and Ebonics with other Black people.
@David well... that is a bad example from multiple angles. Firstly, Ebonics was renamed African American Vernacular English in the 2000s (and now sometimes simply African American English) because it is closer to a creole than a simple stylistic shift. AAVE has grammar patterns that are not present in US American English and is often the source of new words that end up getting adopted in to US English. The "same" sentence can sometimes have drastically different connotations.
@soycamo I left the US in the 2000s, I'm not always aware of the new trends.
Still "African-American English" is still English, just like US English is also still English, and shifting from US English to African American English and back to US English in the same conversation between two people is still not code switching.
Code switching is when I start talking about something in one language mais après je continue à parler dans l'autre langue sometimes without even realizing it. And ⤵️
