@davidgerard maybe it ain't that simple. I mean, if they don't file the patent, someone else might, so it could be a defensive move. Also, something being patented doesn't necessarily mean monopoly. I also find it fair if the company that invested in something gets some return from opening it to other vendors.

@davidgerard Kind of related, but I always thought that Lego would be the perfect company to standardise on home automation stuff. But then, they would also go evil (not that they haven't already by their embrace/extinguish tactics on the after-sales markets... and by just being random caltrops for unsuspecting barefoot folk)

@davidgerard Framework laptops use standard m.2 hard drives, and SODIMM RAM that are both easily replaced- already putting them above the competition. You can also reuse the mainboard.

The fact that they produce replacement parts for the other parts that anyone can repair, may not be *omg perfect FOSS ideal*, but it's a lot better than other manufacturers while allowing them to stay in business.

They also just... never promised that they would be an open platform.

IANAL - but I don't see anything novel in the framework, we've been making computers out of replaceable parts for a long time now, and looking at the patent - I still don't.

@davidgerard I did think it was weird af because theoretically shouldn't you just be able to 3D print housing for a type C to whatever converter to sit inside? I'm more curious why considering the patent was apparently abandoned.

Though, I think what people are missing is it's kind of telling the super open hyper modular laptop manufacturer even tried to patent their module system.

For the longevity proposition to make sense, you have to sell a product that can outlive *you*. Don't force to buyer to bet on your company's success.

@davidgerard Someone who shall remain nameless--but you can probably guess who--recommended this in *glowing* terms, to the point that I was watching them for pricing for my next machine. (Obviously, before the "free speech" bs broke.) There were a bunch of other recommendations which are now specious, and I'm beginning to wonder how much shilling was involved.
