Let me summarize the controversy around the Black Athena book using contemporary examples.

@mekkaokereke Sadly, first I've heard of this, but it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Plenty of religions plagiarised other culture's gods. The Jewish name for God is the combination of the names of a Mesopotamian and Sumerian god, the crescent moon in Islam is derived from traditional Bedouin faith, Roman gods themselves are literally just renamed Greek gods afaict.

A historian in the future in the year 2426, might realize that the entire world has music, drama, language, and culture, even dance, that was heavily influenced by the USA. They might then realize that US culture was influenced by Black Americans.
And that Black American culture is from West Africa.
That historian then might write a book saying, "🤔Wow. This level of cultural domination is typically only seen through colonization! Therefore, I think it's possible that Black people from the Aro Kingdom in Nigeria, may have colonized Europe, and then North America, and then Asia!"

Which is why I deeply distrust the concept of "Western Civilization".
It reduced the USA to a cultural appendix of (Western) Europe, and erases the contribution of Black and indigenous Americans.
In the end, it's just another guise for White Supremacy.

It also erases (awareness of) thel contribution of Arabic people to Spanish culture and civilisation, and of course of scientific advances made in other parts of the world and either ignored or appropriated, and a ton of other things, and people.
... looking at the world from Western Europe, though, the US stopped being an appendix. They're an offspring that has become dominant. Whatever the US does, Europe will start doing not much later. They're leading us, even as we're laughing at their stupidity. A few years later, everyone's forgotten the jokes and accepts whatever they do as normal.
...so I'm afraid the concept of "Western civilisation" is alive and kicking. I just wish it weren't.
Certainly, the the USA is currently dominant. However, the USA - or at least, the White Supremacist elites who largely run news and the media - define the USA as an extension of "European Civilization".
Or at least their warped, revisionist view of what "European Civilization" ought to be like. Among other things, this is why the " #Eurabia " conspiracy is so popular in the USA: "Oh no, Europe has immigrants! The Sacred Ancestral Homelands must be pure, and free of Mud People!"
(Another clue that the USA is currently culturally dominant can be seen in the way that European fascist groups and parties take their cues from their American counterparts. I mean, fascists never had many original ideas to begin with, but these days it's especially blatant.)
