Ahoy @atpfm Accidental Tech Podcasts. This week the boys in the band had a long chat about terminal windows. Somehow, they got through it all without mention of “the shell”.
I know they were Bourne sufficiently long ago to know of such things.
The terminal window mostly emulates a VT-52 or some such mythical device. The shell does all the magic like history, environment variables, etc.
And /etc and ~ “fc-files” configure your shell of preference creating aliases and environment variables.
@DismalManorGang We are well aware, thank you. (I even used some of these "mythical" VT-xxx devices directly in my youth!)
@atpfm Congrats to Alex Siracusa for surviving 4 years at WPI, dual degree, and 4.0 GPA.
And for reminding us that ATP boffins done got ol’ and can't remember which shell they're using and where the config files are. 😊
And a shout out to FireSign Theater for teaching us that “When you’re two places at once, you're no place at all” Apple development environment is a mix of new and old. Still BSD deep down, but new management layer and all the MacOS on top.
@DismalManorGang For the record, I know exactly what shell I'm using and where all my dot files are! Now, as for the 30+ year-old *contents* of all those dot files…
@siracusa I can never keep the shell RC files straight, John. Or what should be in the system shell RC and user RC. You're doing better than I could back in my working days. Surprised no mention of shell and shell environment in the episode.
The point I was trying to make is that MacOS layers new complexities atop the old. It took a while to get there.
I’m going to have to give this episode some undivided attention to see what the Time Machine and backup issues are.
@DismalManorGang I think I did mention that I use the ancient and creaky tcsh shell at one point in the episode.
