after reading That rust PR, I can see what they were *trying* to say, but if you lead your big controversial post with “comments raising ethical or legal concerns will be moderated, technical concerns only” then absolutely the only thing anyone is going to talk about is the alarming ethical and legal concern they now have

@0xabad1dea it's interesting because the actual policy being proposed is extremely reasonable and quite conservative given the situation.
(I'm not surprised people are losing their godsdamned minds over it tho.)

1) if you want to post a Take on a long post and/or form a strong opinion about it that informs your actions going forward, remember to actually read the entire post and not just someone else's two-sentence Take in a vacuum
2) if you don't want to read the post, valid, Marcus Aurelius releases you from the obligation to have a Take. In fact, please don't have a Take

I get why so many people want to weigh in. I do, and I don’t even use rust, let alone contribute.
But right now we have a war for the Overton window. Tech bro allies want the window to exclude ethical and environmental and safety concerns and center on inequality being the default position, which is shown in many of those posts.
Others want the default to be AI-free and introducing it only after it has proven to be good. I’m in that camp and want to vote.

@0xabad1dea If the ethical and legal concerns were small this wouldnt have blown up. The only reason it sounds so absurd is that the ethical and legal concerns are overwhelming. That whole thread is an unintentional admission that these problems simply can't be overcome.
