Looks straight out of Doctor who. The survival mechanism is to misdirect potential predators. While other predators keep them safe because of their apparent usefulness, unaware of the danger that lies beneath.
@cstross not very well camouflaged. Let’s run over the more brilliant ones and watch over a few as natural selection moves us toward mottled-tarmac-and-dust larvae.
