Protip to all the #Linux developers out there. If you want Linux to have a bigger appeal; please make software that's easy to use for non-tech people, that's not full of bugs, and hire designers as well as people who can make tutorials in plain language.
I've been so frustrated not with one but with many things lately that I'm this close to reinstalling Windows...
@David and Windows is not full of bugs how?
@jupiter Honestly, no. Windows has many issues because of privacy and stuff, but bugs are not one.
Also, I was not talking about the OS itself as much as all the replacement software I need to use to replace the ones I used on Windows and that don't exist on Linux.
@David I think the primary problem is the chicken and the egg. To make money selling software designed to run on Linux there needs to be a large user base...which there isnt. To get a large user base, the overall experience (including quality, variety, and compatibility of software) needs to exceed that of Windows and Mac. Ordering people who are primarily volunteers producing free software to work harder for free isnt the way to get there.
@David The Gnome desktop strives to do exactly that. They keep simplifying their apps, and they follow a clear and beautiful design language (Adwaita).
I don't know what applications you've been struggling with, if it's specialized software then this advice might not help. But I'm usually able to find a Gnome/Adwaita app for most of my day-to-day needs. Here's a nice list of Gnome-aligned applications: https://apps.gnome.org/#circle
@Corax42 It's more a series a little things than one big thing, but the drawing app I've been using (Pinta) works well for a few weeks and then constantly crashes until I uninstall it and reinstall it. Some software I regularly use on Windows that don't exist for Linux and I can't make Wine/Bottles work for the life of me. Da Vinci Resolve supposedly works on Linux, except that you need a PhD in computers to install it on Linux, and so on...
@David I see. In fairness, nobody knows how to get Wine/Bottles to work 😊 Running Windows software on Linux is obviously an option of last resort, and bugs are basically guaranteed that way.
Unless, of course, you rely on companies like Valve to seemlessly integrate it into their products, in which case it just works like magic.
@David I know we've talked about DaVinci Resolve before, some months ago, and nothing worked; but did you get around to trying the DavinciBox approach that installs the app inside a distrobox container?
@kontrollierterWahnwitz Because to report a bug, I need to go to Github, and it's another thing that's totally obscure and unusable if you're not a tech person. The "report a bug" link sends me to Github and then what? I have no idea, I never understood the first thing about this site. (and to give you a reference, while I'm not a tech perso, I'm the most computer literate person in my circles, so i let you imagine other people)
