this massively slows down the process of building e.g. nuclear reactors, bridges, housing, power lines, the water supply, etc, and it's extremely expensive
in the case of nuclear reactors, this actively makes them less desirable than alternatives. sometimes you have to give up the splice() system call because it can't be made safe
