unfortunately there is no government in the world that can be trusted to build or audit a secure computing base but the reason bridges generally don't break is not because of superior technology but because you can't build things that people rely on without undergoing a massive degree of safety regulations

this massively slows down the process of building e.g. nuclear reactors, bridges, housing, power lines, the water supply, etc, and it's extremely expensive
in the case of nuclear reactors, this actively makes them less desirable than alternatives. sometimes you have to give up the splice() system call because it can't be made safe
if safety is something no government will ensure, then they lose legitimacy. this is a very radical thing to consider
