Spring storm on the prairie. Power out.
Post
@timbray I'm from New Zealand. We have very different ideas on what constitutes a "high wind".
@nzlemming In NZ, that'd be a “gentle breeze”? I’ve been there a bit and have been spared any big windstorms, just lucky I guess.
@timbray Well, we're right in the "Roaring Forties". Average wind speed at Wellington airport is 29kmph (18mph). Winds reach gale force (75kmph or 46mph) an average of 175 days a year. Calm days where you can't feel the wind or see the trees moving are extremely rare.
We used to put ropes along the sidewalk to prevent people getting blown into the street, but buildings are designed differently now and there's not so much risk. Or we don't care anymore...
@nzlemming FWIW that clip was 70 gusting to 90, down from the forecast 90/110. I don't live on the Prairies but they tell me that happens a small number of times/year. (numbers in km/h)
Idly wondering how badly it stresses the Fediverse fabric when someone with a lot of followers uploads a 75M video.
@timbray I thought about this a while ago. I think an opportunity was missed to build something truly decentralized. The fediverse doesn't have one central server, fair enough. But most servers host many accounts. I feel a bit nostalgic for a network where each node (in this case profile) can communicate directly with any other node, like in a true peer to peer network.
@timbray Do you mean uploaded to a non-Peertube instance, specifically? I get the impression that Peertube uses a Bittorrent-like protocol that helps with simultaneous viewing. But I may be wrong.
