@idzie I live in a sannàkkômuk (“difficult district”) named so by Indigenous peoples for its many swamps, ravines, gneiss deposits, and steep creeks. Nearby trees are mainly hemlock with various types of birches taking over via succession. Native plants include mountain laurel, ferns, and raspberries. Mammals are well represented with black bears, porcupines, and black squirrels. Many forest loving warblers migrate here. Fireflies light up the night while katydids provide the soundtrack.

I live on the sandy shores of a great freshwater sea. Small rivers carve meandering paths through the glacier-flattened sandy loam soils. The river bottoms are choked with eastern white cedar navigated by nimble kingfishers, and the uplands hold sugar bushes and spring ephemerals where they haven't been cleared for cash crops and dairies. Some spots were too wet and wild to drain, so settlers left intact impressive tangles of flooded timber and wetlands full of blue herons and sandhill cranes.

@idzie The soil is sandy loam mixed with granite cobbles left by glaciers. The ecosystem has shifted radically over the years. Originally forests managed by controlled burns, then cleared for farming, now returned to mixed species: oaks, pine, red & sugar maple, shadbush & clethra sometimes found in the understory, asters every fall. No teasel. Deer, wild turkeys, and even bobcats are returning. Possums are moving in as winters warm. The original wolves have been replaced by hybrid wolf-coyotes.

@idzie I live in the wake of melted glaciers that carved the landscape into hills and valleys rife with their rocky debris. The trees around me are relatively young, white pines and red maples with scattered hickories and oaks, grown from land cleared for farms then abandoned. The undergrowth is lush and scattered with laurels, spicebush, and blueberries, with carpets of wintergreen, ferns, and sedges.

I'll start: I live surrounded by sugar and silver maples, eastern hemlock and balsam poplar, occasional stands of shagbark hickory and yellow birch. At just slightly higher elevations and sandier, rockier soil, the eastern white pines thrive. In spring the woods are filled with red and white trilliums, and yellow trout lilies, and the vernal pools sing with spring peepers, wood frogs, and boreal chorus frogs. Beavers and muskrats populate the marshes, ponds, and lakes. Three species of terns can be seen along the major rivers--common, Caspian, and black--along with six species of swallows--tree, cliff, bank, barn, northern rough-winged, and purple martins.
