Naw, the bankers in the UK are insanely too powerful and they have more or less adopted the position that "if anyone left of Bismarck ever comes to power and tries to CHANGE anything, we are going to PURPOSELY tank the fucking economy overnight."
And somehow, the British have not strung these people, these bankers who are elected by nobody, up by their intestines, even though they make these threats in the open.
When you read "so and so is afraid of the City" this is what they mean.
These bankers basically hold britains as their pets, domesticized to the point where they even pretend banking itself to be an “industry“ - for lack of actual industry banking previously and ruthlessly destroyed.
Needless to say they also own the media, so there is absolutely no doubt about the city boys being the true heroes and saviors of britain, as far as your trusted media outlets are concerned. Ain't that wonderful?
@AnarchoNinaWrites@jorts.horse Iceland got it right but the UK is deliberately being pushed down a USA style political path. The problem being that outside of Englandshire there are other political choices and they are persisting despite huge pressure from the media and Westminster.
If you impoverish huge swathes of your population outside of a few perceived "good" areas then they eventually turn either to fascism or another choice beyond the 2(/3) party system.
I honestly don't know where we are going but obviously I hope the results lately are the trending direction.
@hamishtpb I mean, in total fairness - US banks are NOT this powerful. They would never be able to threaten a whole economy because their own rich owners would scream. The go to move by City is to raise the interest rate - our banks can't even DO that because of the Fed.
(I should say that one time, precisely ONE fucking time in history, this has worked out in the UK people's favor - when Liz Truss wanted to start a radical experiment in pretending Milton Friedman was right about libertarian economics. The joke is Truss lost to a head of lettuce - but actually she was removed by the City. Otherwise? This is a terrible deal for the British people and they should fucking drive these bankers into the sea.)
I will say this tho - whenever bankers and rich people do this, say to you "it's my way or I will crash the economy" you should snap take their bet.
You're not a billionaire, you do NOT depend on the money moving constantly. They will never tell you this but the rich people who own the banks are in fact more invested in "the economy" than you are. That's a bet you will win.
But in places where this happens, we rarely take that bet. We usually let the money guys scare us into obeying.
