My entire platform for president is to make it a felony to put a USB-C connector on a device that can only charge from a USB-A power supply.

My BTech radios. C jack on the radio, plugged into my new 65w charger no chargie. tldr usb A fixed it, sfter sn6 inkling memory... MOST ANNOYING.
@tomjennings Worse - newer Betch radios fix it. So some of my (identical looking) batteries can charge with a usb-c, others can’t.
@mattblaze @tomjennings I also have this with Unilite work lights.
I don't usually travel with any USB-A chargers but I just use a USB-C to A adaptor and back to C, which seems to work.
Yes, it's preposterous, but avoids a special cable!
@mattblaze how would you even make it so a device cares about the source plug?
@LanceJZ @mattblaze
USB-C devices can, instead of using new-fangled negotiation on the CC line to get the voltage and current they want, just have two 5.1K resistors for "legacy" connection, which gets them 5V at up to 900mA.
However, a USB device _must_ do one or the other to meet spec. Matt is talking about a device that goes _neither_, which is grossly out of spec, apparently just to save the manufacturer a fraction of a cent per unit. (Or out of stupidity.)
I would like to support your candidacy, but first I need to know your position on companies that build chargers with USB-A receptacles that just output straight 12V DC. And for extra fun, the charging cable's other end is a 3.5 mm audio jack.
@DaveMWilburn If that's not already a felony, it should be
It's basically just arson with extra steps.

"I'm so old I remember when USB was promised to solve all our connector problems..."
😮💨
@mattblaze oooh! oooh! I know what precise thing they left out causes that issue!
@mattblaze chuck it all and start over with usb D
Matt Blaze for Prez!
@mattblaze oh heh I have a bike light with that confusing property, too. In fact I'd go as far as to ban USB-C power delivery entirely as the specification is so hideously overcomplicated that it's trivial for implementations to have even subtler/stupider interoperability issues 😡
@mattblaze
And in your second term please fix the USB version numbers. 😉
@oneiros that’s a matter for the courts.
@mattblaze @oneiros
Zelazny's "Courts of Chaos," most likely.
@mattblaze You have my vote.
@mattblaze Just in the last three months, I've acquired four such devices. It's just rude.
@mattblaze Last week I had to buy a pair of these hybrid charging cables. I hear this is to save installing a single resistor. I think the cables cost more than a resistor...
Where is the EU when we need them?
@mattblaze You mean the wall wart has a female A connector & thus the cable is male A to male C?
@20002ist Right. They ship a device with a USB-C connector and a USB-C to USB-A cable, and warn you only their cable works.
@mattblaze
Have you tested if it works with a normal USB C?
Maybe somebody added the resistors but did not tell the manual writer
@carstenfranke @20002ist Yes, of course I did. How else would I know to complain about it not working with USB-C? Do you think I'm just making this up?
@mattblaze As in “don’t use a USB-C charger & cable because the former will damage the device/void the warranty/cause all life as you know it to stop instantaneously and every molecule in your body to explode at the speed of light”? Yeah, that’s seriously brain-damaged.
@20002ist No, it just doesn't do anything when you use a USB-C supply.
@mattblaze @20002ist USB-A to USB-C cables aren't uncommon, especially for charging. But "only their cable works" is bizarre.
@SteveBellovin @20002ist Yes, I understand you can get the cables. I have cables.
The problem is that if I see a USB-C connector, I should reasonably expect to be able to charge it with a USB-C charger.
@mattblaze But Matt, those two resistors would bankrupt so many companies, the US would go into a great recession!
