@emilymbender I also liked the very explicit "text predictor" version, similar to "stochastic parrot", but what feels less pejorative and more descriptive.
I like the suggested "synthetic text extruding machine". It seems to convey the functionality vividly,
Or "sentence-like fabricator" in another phrasing.
On the other hand "hallucination" is unfortunate, but appears to have pretty definitively won the day. Possibly worse than "AI" which we are likely stuck with till the next thing comes along.
I am struggling with a bunch of heavily "stochastically parroted" student papers.
Took a break. Read your article. What a breath of fresh air to read a text by an intelligent fellow human being. If only I can make my students see how utterly greyish the "prose" is that they're hiding behind.
I also like the name stochastic errorists.
