Why one size? Safety.
Maude said it best. “Zoos are full, prisons are overflowing... oh my, how the world still dearly loves a cage.”

As Audrey Watters points out in here most recent Second Breakfast post,...
The "M" in LMS, stands for Management, hence cages, hence one size fits all.
@carpetbomberz @toddconaway @cogdog @sleslie @twwoodward @acroom @jimgroom @econproph @timklapdor Norman’s Law still holds true. Everything becomes an LMS eventually. We can complain about that and yearn for something else, or we can work within the natural tendencies toward convergent evolution of platforms used in online learning.

All the laws START WITH THE DAMN DEMO .... IT ENDS IN A DAMN LMS!
@cogdog @dnorman @carpetbomberz @toddconaway @sleslie @twwoodward @acroom @jimgroom @econproph @timklapdor Mine won't be an LMS. True, probably nobody will ever use it. But it won't be an LMS.

What will it be?
(And having transitioned from uni to working on storytelling projects within health, I have come back from the future to tell you that everything eventually becomes MS Teams.)

It's my great white whale, the personal learning environment (PLE), a single user application, not a multi-user platform. You decide what you want to read and where to send what you create. Your data is your own and you can access it from wherever you want. Runs on the web or on your desktop.
(Still very much a work in progress, but coming together)
@Downes @kate @cogdog @dnorman @carpetbomberz @toddconaway @sleslie @twwoodward @acroom @jimgroom @econproph In terms of a "learning" system – This is the Way! The fact that so much student effort is locked away in a university system is a horrible consequence of the LMS. It also shifts the power dynamic from the learner to the institution and forces them to engage on their terms. I think the flip side of this are the Teaching tools - allowing a class to collaborate, publish, and collect.
