Totalitarianism relies on establishing a facts-proof alternative reality for its believers - even moreso than fascism. And GenAI is a fantastic tool if your goal is undermining consensus reality and perpetuating a false one - not just because it generates propaganda and deepfakes, but because it gets facts wrong, makes stuff up, and generally makes it difficult to find true quality information.

It's a technology for centralizing power and taking away agency that used to be more distributed

These are the problems that AI is meant to solve:

* Labour, by replacing workers or at least providing the pretext for firing them

* Democratic speech, by just drowning out humans with text extruded in proportion to one's chequebook

* Human intervention/scrutiny on decision making, which can now be obfuscated at scale

It won't cure cancer or fix the planet

It will concentrate power for the rich
