finally tried live HDMI output on the loved one's EOS 4000D!
good:
* the HDMI->USB Just Works and the camera output shows up right there in OBS with no issues.
bad:
* everything else.
* it's sending only the display, not the sensor output.
* this is because that's the only use they could think of for the HDMI output, playing back recordings on your telly.
* there is no Magic Lantern for EOS 4000D
* there is a Canon app that wants $10/mo to use your own fucking camera
* even with that the output apparently doesn't go over 720p
* i have ordered the correct USB cable (it's a USB *mini*-B to USB-A and it cost £4)* and there are directions on how to fuck around with gphoto2 but i expect no joy
it's a great little camera for taking photos and *recording* video and that's it
verdict: get something released this decade lol
* why the fuck were Canon releasing new mini-B in 2018? because as far as i can tell the 4000D is made from cheap parts they found in the skip out the back. cheap, cheerful and is what it is
