it kinda saddens me that matrix was the most painful service to switch usernames in - because that's just not a thing. you have to start over with a new account, effectively. :(

even IRC (well, at least libera) has better support, where you can add new-nick to your nickname group, change your account name, and that's pretty much it - all access levels will just be magically adjusted.

oh well.

@sky I remember the transition from IRC to Matrix at Mozilla. I struggled with it at first, but the other alternatives were far worse for accessibility. I suggested at one stage if we shouldn't look at upgrading to an IRC V3 server. IRC V3 is a standard that brings many more modern concepts to IRC. And our provider IrcCloud was even a supporter of that. But I wasn't heard.

@marcozehe I have very complicated thoughts.

I generally like Matrix (and, well, I'm also the de-facto admin of the mozilla matrix server these days), so I'm not gonna pretend like IRC is better than Matrix. IRC has problems, and IRC has a lot of problems.

But also, yeah, Matrix has problems, and those hurt. A lot.

@sky @marcozehe I have a love/hate relationship with Matrix. On the one hand, it’s pretty easy to use these days, and can act as a decent drop-in replacement for Discord in a number of situations.

On the other hand, there are a number of issues with the protocol, the main reference implementation is still Synapse, and the next-gen replacements seem to be gathering dust. There’s a frustrating amount of bloat, and it takes a huge amount of work to build either a server implementation or a client.
