My rating system for books:

5 stars - highly recommend, will chatter to you about how good this book is

4 stars - slightly less enthusiastic chattering but will absolutely recommend

3 stars - Eh, I’m not sad I read it but also didn’t super love it. Probably would only recommend if I knew it was likely to be particularly liked by someone else

2 stars - Didn’t like it, probably finished it anyhow because it was just good enough to make me think it might get better

1 stars - I really did not like this book, probably didn’t finish it, and may even rant to you about how bad or annoying it was

At a 5 my life revolves around the book. It's in my dreams. My waking day. I think about it when I'm cooking. I belong in that world. I'm a character. Given a wish I would be there. Under the sea or in space or on a grand adventure, in peril, saving the world and fighting injustice. I want to change my name. Reshape the world around me. Reality is no longer the strongest tether. I must read everything ever written by that author. I want to know everything. What's the lore? Are there any online groups I can join? When is the next book coming out. Whyyyy is it so far away? I can't stand this. I'll re-read it to see if I missed anything. Should I change everything about myself to fit in with the characters in the book? No one else must know of this. It is mine. They wouldn't understand like I do. My life will never be the same.

Matt Dinnimans Dungeon Crawler Carl. Just did all 7 books in a little over a week and now have to wait until 8 is released on Tuesday. 😭

Before that was the Culture series. Dennis E Taylors Bobiverse before that and before that I was working my way through all the Hugo and Nebula award winners because of my favourites - Haldeman, Scalzi and Tchaikovsky which led me into the hard scifi genre and so I discovered Le Guin and Poul Anderson. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop. However I recently tried to reread ALL of the Dune books, including Brian Herbert/Kevin Anderson and, whilst I really enjoyed them the first time round, I had to give up on which I was a bit sad about.

@jonobie basically same, my 3 stars is wide for "I have reservations that keep it from a 4 or a 2”, and I will absolutely rant about how bad a 2 is, while 1 is reserved for toxic garbage.
