strange account with even stranger post: the ‘article’ linked ‘reports’ a huge rise in AI systems refusing or circumventing human instructions in safety relevant ways….
but the linked references don’t exist ….
a UK gov webpage, a Bloomberg article, an FT article, an Anthropic report …. 403 errors
what is this? who is this? and why?
@UlrikeHahn the "report" does read like it was at least edited with an LLM, if not entirely written by one. Given it spends some time talking about market effects, could it be an LLM generated piece trying to manipulate prices, where all the references are "hallucinations" but the author doesn't care because their target audience doesn't read references?
@aoanla looking a bit more at the website of the “organization” producing the “report” - the About Us page doesn’t go to information about who “The Board” is, nor does the contact page contain contact info…..

@aoanla maybe, but the probability of all the references being hallucinations seems very close to zero to me… so this seems intentionally crafted, and that raises the question of who and why…
beyond that the profile of the account posting it is also a bit unusual: it feels bot like….
and then I’m at the place where I find myself wondering about influence operations for hybrid warfare setting up shop in the fediverse…
@aoanla but market manipulation also seems like a possibility and the two aren’t mutually exclusive…
whatever it is, though, it’s concerning if material like it takes hold here…

@funbaker that’s your prerogative but I do care: it’s a piece of targeted disinformation and I care about who is making it and why and I particularly care about how it ended up in my timeline

@funbaker well, I care about the integrity of our information environment, both professionally and personally. That means I care if I receive intentionally deceptive content in my time line and I care if there is coordinated inauthentic activity in the fediverse….
trolling is one thing, the injection of co-ordinated, well funded disinformation by hostile actors into our information systems is quite another
