My current thinking is that with Doug as a +7 digger, the +2 from hard digging isn't so important.
Of course, for a Digger/Operator hybrid, that +2 is doing more (I'm guessing that diminishing returns applies here).
Against that, we need to consider that there may be a cool steam vent too close for comfort.
Against THAT - do we really need to worry about the heat?

My feeling is that the next big project is coring out the swamp biome on the left.
The argument being that I want gold, therefore I want gold amalgam, and the pockets there look more appealing than elsewhere.
