looks like the next #GoToSocial release (when we get around to it) will include both automated cleanup of old statuses, and relay subscriptions + relay push connections; so, nice combination of getting new statuses into the database, and removing old ones 馃槉 
@dumpsterqueer Nice! Relay subscriptions might make me use GtS more again. How do I find relays and how do I subscribe there?
