I covered data work exploitation in my most recent talk, but I did not highlight how prevalent it has become in the US.
The horrors of what this kind of work does in the global south will continue, of course. But for "AI" to get "smarter", the data pipeline/supply chain will increasingly depend on displaced workers desperate for work, even in more developed countries.
There's a false narrative that envisions a world where the data work will improve as these systems are capable to self-train, and that somehow, we will benefit from this technology long term.
I would gently point to a historical example, like the cotton gin in the US South... It might have made cotton picking more efficient. But gluttonous demand meant that exploitation grew (slavery), and the whole economy of the south became dependent on the textile industry.
