How could Apple make Neo and Ultra versions of more of their products?
@atpfm I’m genuinely curious: what is it about Hacker News that puts @siracusa and @caseyliss off? I always find it like, the only place on the internet aside from _maybe_ mastodon where people are able to intelligently discuss tech topics without resorting to flame wars and tribalism (the exchange you read out in the episode is a good example).
Is there something I’m not seeing? Some experience I haven’t had?
@niekvdpas There are often interesting comments there, but the prevailing attitude is one that I have grown tired of in my old age. It’s a lot of commenters explaining how they know more/better about whatever was posted, and then usually quickly spiraling off into predicable, petty squabbles tangentially related to the topic.
@atpfm I'm not sure why it matters if apple calls something ultra or not? Idle speculation about something that might happen are my least favorite sections
@jccalhoun Like I said on the show, one way it could matter is if it means a new price/feature tier in a product line. For example, if the only way to get an M6 SoC in an Apple laptop is to buy a more-expensive-than-any-MacBook-Pro "MacBook Ultra", then that would be a new limitation vs. the past M-series laptops releases. Yes, it's all rumors/speculation, but I think this kind of speculation is fun.
@atpfm A lot of talk in this and prev ep about people wanting all the good but just don't want to pay for it. I'm sure there's plenty of them, but I think there are others who understands compromises but just can't afford $2000+ computer. So they're not ungrateful, or ignorant.
My first own Mac was an LC475 and that was all I could afford, and I understood the compromises but it was this or no Mac at all. John said the LC was bad, but honestly this was quite good. It even had 256 COLORS! 🌈😍
@aetles IMO, the LC was a larger percent worse than its price was percent lower than the better Macs. So, not a great deal. (But, yes, better than no Mac at all.)
The LC and LC II felt too compromised.
The LC III was fine, and the LC 475 was great for the price. All that ‘040 cache.
I never really got SE/30 love, as my first Mac (LC 520, basically an all in one LC III) blew it away in most ways, at 1/3rd the price. Living 4 years in the past makes computers seem even more amazing.
