we're kind of growing convinced that fedi encourages an unhealthy kind of communication between people -- in a way that's been amplified since the mass exodus from twitter

from our perspective, it feels like the culture on here has shifted to allowing for less nuance / genuine conversation, and more towards amplifying minor fragmentations and differences

so many voices on here seem to come from people we ostensibly share a lot of values with -- but who seem all unable to work together, breaking into in-groups based on what I'll call "absolute alignment of values" -- where people generally have significant common interests, like the survival of queer folks, but whose arguments have become so all-or-nothing that differing beliefs over implementation details are treated like fundamental ideological disconnects that proclude all possibility of collaboration

at this point, I think the people who agree on the important things -- like how we need to protect trans folks and immigrants in a world that seems to be growing crueler -- really need to be standing together, not arguing over the latest meta on implementation ideas like universal basic income, or deciding that someone still using their twitter is enough to implicate them as irredemably complicit in musk's facist antics

for us, I think all of this means that it's time to put this platform down, and continue our work to make things better in contexts where people still can make genuine connections and work with each other -- this one isn't serving its purpose of bringing us together, anymore; and the people who interact with us on here either seem to be folks who already very much agree with us, or who are unlikely to have their mind changed by even a thoughtful fedi post

we're going to do our damned best to contribute to a better future for all of us; and that means staying in the places that best enable us to do that, and leaving those that detract from the mission
