Prior to this, he just expected to... win the elections. The Midterms, the illegal 3rd term he intends to run for - he just assumed he'd win.
Now he realizes he won't. Attacking Iran was not a magic I win button after all, and he doesn't have any ideas left.
But he has Stephen Miller. And Stephen Miller knows a way to retain power even if you can't win elections.
And thus - everything that's happened the past three weeks or so.
The argument is essentially "it's okay if I rig the elections, it's okay if I prosecute the Democrats, it's okay if I merc protestors - because otherwise you will be enslaved. Whatever must be done to stop that, must be done."
I am telling you - this is not a pitch to shore up his votes. It's something a lot worse than that because he knows he's not winning elections going forward.
The picture I can see now, that I couldn't see six weeks ago is that Trump genuinely thought attacking Iran would give him a bounce. And it didn't. And you need to grasp that this has been what passes for political cunning in his hamburger-like brain for DECADES AND DECADES now - he believed a President who starts a war, can't lose an election.
Well he knows that's fake now. And that's why the past several weeks have been UNHINGED.

When Diesel hits $12 a gallon is around when things start really breaking down.
I'm guessing August to October for when the US is no longer a viable political entity.
But that will not be a single event; more something that will be recognized in retrospect.
