google's new "mobile reCAPTCHA verification" will require you to scan a QR code from either an iOS device with the reCAPTCHA app or an android device with up-to-date google play services.
@lynnesbian I really do think that at this point, we've done anti-fraud and security too much and we should dial it back and accept that it's okay that a bit of fraud happens if as a tradeoff we can keep stuff like "being able to own a computer you can run things on" and "privacy like. in general"
@halcy @lynnesbian That is what I wish people would accept when it comes to social services/programs.
Efficiency, as well -- the reason government services are separated and there is no "centralized database" is because it makes it a lot harder to target specific people/groups of people and it helps to force accountability. The drop in efficiency is worth it.
@halcy @lynnesbian they like fraud. fraud is what gets them vc funding.
they don't like not getting a cut. this means that if you successfully do a fraud with their services, a thing that will continue to happen because they're not that interested in stopping it, they will get their cut.
@halcy I highly doubt Google's doubt was security. You know, passing this captcha is basically instant linking your google account to website visit
@halcy @lynnesbian Yeah, sure, you're just a decade too late with that idea now, I suspect. And also, it's not enough to just post that hot take, but to act accordingly. That includes denying particular offers.
