Griffin of "Bugs and Biology" just had the experience that makes so many people reconsider ants:
It is the moment when you are observing a colony of ants and realize that the colony is observing YOU right back. They colony is trying to analyze and classify YOU. The colony has plans for YOU.
It can be a chilling experience and bull ants do it better than any ants since they watch large vertebrates with their eyes.
They manage large vertebrates.
This experience of "the colony has noticed you" also happens in the book "Consider Her Ways" while observing a leaf-cutter colony our protagonist notices that he has been assigned several ants to monitor him from a nearby tree trunk. These are large solider ants with big heart-shaped heads and they slowly get closer to him eventually climbing up on his notebook and looking up facing him.
The leaf-cutters don't attack, they are just curious about the large creature in their kingdom.
