While Subway lines in Manhattan are very occasionally willing to punch through some quite deep rock sections, such as north of 168th, in Brooklyn and Queens they generally prefer to avoid, run alongside, or sneak through the occasional gap in the Harbor Hill Terminal Moraine, the big pile of dirt dumped along the north shore of Long Island by retreating glaciers about 15,000 years ago.
