whenever anyone insists to me something is “just like that author you like” they mean meaningless superficial details and i wonder if i’m the one that’s reading books wrong

@hipsterelectron then why do so many people confuse surface aesthetics (puns, magic systems, gay characters) with similarity in writing!

@hipsterelectron nah i weirdly often get people saying that book a and book b are similar cause they’re in the same genre, but like, brandon sanderson writes pulpy non-stories with deep magic systems and grrm confuses obtuse plots for good writing and people think they’re similar to pratchett bc fantasy
