My brother thinks I'm being too harsh on Qifrey.
and it's like.
He is a complicated character, clearly a traumatized character (I would not be surprised if it turned out he was Ordinary like Coco before he was found in a coffin, but I am not caught up in the manga) and he has a time-limit (due to diminishing eyesight) but he will stop at nothing to achieve his means which I think are LESS About stopping the Brimmed Hats and MORE About revenge.
I mean it's like yeah I think he took Coco in partially because he sees a kindred spirit in her, but also 100% because he's hoping she can lead him to his revenge.
Also. Let's not forget: He has a hidden incomplete (to quickly complete) spell in his hat for targeted memory erasure!
So far where I am in in the manga he has done t to the stationer and to his BEST GODDAMN FRIEND.
and the thing about his best friend? Super fucking observant and was willing to ride or die for him in a "damn the rules" way because friendship or possibly love (you can certainly interpret it that way, I won't tell you not to ship it! though that is SUCH toxic yaoi rn)
And the really scary thing is that occurred to me when I reread that chapter relatively recently. For all we know they've had that EXACT conversation before.
And that's what really terrifies me!
Like. I LOVE him as a character. But he is definitely morally gray. I'm not gonna bother defining him as "Good or bad"
also the brimmed hats / caps (cannot remember the right term) fascinate me in a "it'd be easy to write them off but society IS fucked up the way it is currently" I mean they're doing fucked up shit to seemingly make Coco a Messiah and I'm not defending that, but also? Current Status Quo? FUCKED UP
I am not saying too much cause I am into like chapter 55ish which I think is past vol 8
But Qifrey's moral complexity and the way that pointed cap witch society creates SO many of its own problems are the most fascinating aspects of the story to me so far
@katrani yeah absolutely. It's so fascinating
