My taxi driver just now, who I neglected to photograph, was a 70+ gentleman resplendently attired in an immaculately tailored bright green zoot suit. I felt shamefully under-dressed the whole ride home.

@mattblaze I was just reading about those: I thought the idea originated in New York, and someone claimed it was from Mexico.
I think the correct story is that some Mexicans in California picked up the idea from blacks in Harlem.
@indyradio that’s my impression. I associate them with jazz-era Harlem, but that’s probably just my NYC bias.
@mattblaze I'm curious about how they made it to the coast quickly enough to confuse historians.

@mattblaze On a trip to Manhattan I managed to *twice* get taxi drivers who (apart from the immaculate cabs) were opera singers in full voice. It was a lot of fun and worth really big tips. Twice!

Somewhere I have a pic of my dad and his friends, all in zoot suits for a night out when they were young. Can't seem to find it at the moment...

@mattblaze As a reader of sci fi/fantasy, you may have had no other choice anyway. We don't know who or what he was. He brought you joy and I appreciate they opportunity to paint the image on my own.

@kennergf I apologize for lacking sufficient virtue to feel sufficient shame without your prompting. I callously found joy in seeing a older fellow clearly living life on his own terms.
@mattblaze I hope you were right and they are just one of those people that simply refuses to stop working. But at the same time I am glad I made think twice on the reason for them to be working.
