@SteveBellovin For very small birds that are far away.
@mattblaze @SteveBellovin I remember this lens being used at Cape Canaveral by photojournalists during the Apollo Project launches.
@xenotar @SteveBellovin Ultra-long "compact" mirror lenses seem to have fallen out of favor for still cameras. Back in the 80's there were zillions of them in the 800mm and up range, by both the system vendors and aftermarket companies.
Weird OOF rendering, but they have their uses.
@mattblaze @SteveBellovin They have the problem you mentioned, fixed aperture, etc., but they are lightweight and compact and very useful in some situations. I own a Nikkor 500mm and got good results with it when the alternatives were ED lenses with 180mm and 300mm, but they were heavy and bulky to carry, although they produce excellent quality images. But I'm a dinosaur in the world of Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
@xenotar @mattblaze 17.5 kg isn't lightweight…
@SteveBellovin @xenotar Because of inflation, it was only about 7 kg when it was introduced.
