This took a bit longer than expected, but it's finally here: the "Join the Fediverse!" zine!
Hmm, it would be kind of neat to make a zine version of https://jointhefediverse.net 🤔

This is fantastic. My “big” project that I believe I mentioned to you previously was going to be a series of articles promoting the fediverse aimed at NJ musicians, mostly because Gary at NJ Stage Magazine said he would publish them after I post them at ferociousdesigns.com. I wanted to get all the articles researched & written before launching, so it has stalled a bit. But I’m rethinking that rollout, so hopefully the first one will be posted soon(ish).
A little preview!
And a shout out to @zserge, thank you for making https://github.com/zserge/zine!
Great work @stefan! For the next iteration, I'd propose to add more than mail envelops as icons crossing the network, p.5. #Fediverse is so much more than boring old-email-style letters. Let there be ⭐likes and
videos and 🖼️photos and
hashtags and 🌀threads and all the fun!
@herrleon Thank you!
Hmm, I think you're onto something!
@stefan I love this! It's not A4 size, is it? Having some scaling issues when I try to print it.
@soapdisch Thank you!
Hmm, from the Micro Zine description:
"This stylesheet focuses on producing no-glue 8-page zines out of a single A4 or Letter paper sheet."
Let me look into this a bit more, I wonder if this is the issue I was running into.
Or do you think this can be addressed by changing printer settings?
(Can't use the printer right now, sorry! Will have to play with this a bit more later.)
@stefan hmm, I selected A4 borderless and everything fits on the page, but the margins are pretty wide and I’m not quite sure where the fold lines should be.
@stefan There's only one major weakness in that argument: their friends and celebrities they like are still locked in outside of the federated web, which works for the outside as just another isolated node.
That's one of the main reasons why many people try us out and then leave. And that's why I don't think the argument really works for many folks.
I don't know. Maybe we should frame being here as activism for a better future.
@jorgecandeias One downside of adding so many translations over the years is that changing the content of the site requires more effort, if I want the localizations to stay in sync.
I do agree that this is a more aspirational explanation of the fediverse, but I do think that for a simple little booklet it works well enough.
There is no one way to "sell" the fediverse, and I do think activism is one angle, but also, I feel like most people who do care about that are either already here, or working on making the Atmosphere more independent.
@stefan You're probably right about that last point.
In any case, it's an uphill battle. Herd effects are very, very difficult to fight. Especially with the kind of anti-herd culture we have here. Which is great, for the most part, but is also a major drag to growth.
We could try to replicate the twitter growth story, bringing in politicians and then journalists... but a good chunk of the fedizens would be immediately up in arms against those "clout-seekers". 🤷♂️
A few notes.
You can print the localized versions of the zine itself, but the zine page still needs to be translated, hence the link being only on the English version of the site.

(If you'd like to contribute, feel free to reach out!)
Also, if you could print the zine and let me know if it works okay for you, I would very much appreciate it.
(Bonus point if you'd like to take a photo and share it with me, I might put together a blog post.)
Huge thanks to everyone sharing their photos!

Having a little fun myself.
@Avner Very nice, thank you so much!
And say hi to Scarf for me!
And yeah, I still need to figure out those stickers.
