My first piece of advice for people whose earth-shattering theories are being being ignored and dismissed by the scientific establishment is to stop acting and sounding like a lunatic who no one wants to sit next to on the bus.
Post
BuButBut! Don't you know BUSES DON'T EXIST? It's all a communist conspiracy to undermine car culture! The so-called "buses" carrying paid homeless crisis actors around all day are actually drug delivery trucks owned by the Medelin cartel. Except for the NSA surveillance vans spying on my home wifi. THERE ARE NO BUSES! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!
@cstross And there's nothing a bus can do that an Uber can't do for 10x the price.
* Clutches my over-60s bus pass tightly *
(It gets you free bus travel everywhere in this country, not only local bus services but also intercity coach travel. No means testing, no co-pay, all you can eat travel for free.)
Or your could publish a book and make it persist.
@tomjennings @mattblaze this book looks like i wouldn’t want to sit next to the author on a bus, that’s right
The book is very angry inside, you can feel the author's frustration with just how much the world hates truth. Stupid old Einstein what does he know.
@tomjennings @domi General relativity is just a THEORY, after all. Like, just your opinion, man.
@domi @tomjennings Awesome typography, though.
design on that book is AMAZING - just a master class in telling you what's in the book and if its something you're going to want to read.
The typography. The bold choices of color and material. Everything working together in concert to say that you hold a very special object in your hand.
@mattblaze <waves from fusion energy land>
@stshank @mattblaze Say, whatever happened to Paul "Commercial FUSION this decade!" (80s, 90s, 00s IIRC) Koloc?
👏BIRDS 👏 ARE 👏 NOT 👏 REAL! 👏
(Now, of course, I get the "you are obviously referring to me and how DARE you call me a lunatic" replies.
@mattblaze
Oh ... I'd assumed you were giving advice to lunatics based on personal expertise gained while trying to convince people of your own earth-shattering theories. But I guess you're just another lunaticsplainer 😔
@mattblaze I find tinfoil hat behavior to be a useful signal. Craziness in reasonable clothing takes longer to bozofilter and sometimes gets by.
@mattblaze My favorite from my time as a newspaper science reporter was the guy who couldn't stop sending me messages about parrots on Mars.
@brianvastag Huge if true though.
And maybe tally your Crackpot Index score.

I think that's probably downstream from "understanding Chesterton's fence and why people with expertise respect it"
@munin Maybe, but my advice results in fewer people acting like lunatics who no one wants to sit next to on the bus, which is a win for everyone.
If the people you're talking to can understand why you are perceiving them -as- a ranting lunatic, yes.
This is, IME, frequently not the case.
