I'm pleased to share about a project I've been making progress with at the institution I work for recently:
A ThinkMate HPX QS5-4410 has been running as a server for the math department to conduct research on for the last 13 years, and has recently begun having some issues, including networking troubles, failing drives and some problems booting.
I was hopeful that I could keep it running, and after a good bit of tinkering I've got it booting to an SSD with Ubuntu Server, and it's once again up and running.
There's a bit more that needs finalized before I can get it back in service for the department, but I feel confident it should continue to be a powerful and valuable machine despite its age.
I have given it the name Polaris and am quite pleased with the progress I've made on this.

Maintaining these old machines that run critical local services is such a noble effort. Many quiet craftspeople is a much more wonderful world to live in than one glossy inhuman cloud
@jonny One of the things I appreciate most about my job is that I feel I get to work with computers and information technology in a way that is genuinely beneficial for my community and society.
There's a lot of tech roles these days in which it may be really cool to work on cutting edge tech, but I wouldn't feel like I was making positive contributions.
Even in small ways like giving an old server some more life, I'm very grateful that I have the opportunity to contribute in the ways that I do.
