Terence Tao calling people's research "GOFAI" (good-old fashioned AI) should really say everything about the guy and what situation he's in. It seems to me like he's getting Einsteined. I just really hope he doesn't write letters suggesting accelerated AI weapons development.

@hipsterelectron disconnect, I guess? on some level I could rage, on another I ask myself if it's worth it, and about my own mistakes - but i don't doubt tip-toeing around the hype.

@promovicz i don't understand but i don't think i know everything i just know i think terence tao has said atrociously irresponsible things using his very public position and i don't trust a word he says on any subject as a result
@hipsterelectron i mean something like: i deal a lot with people, so i care about people problems. i don't have to deal with him, but i try to seek answers for social problems around nerddom, so i pay attention to the problems sometimes.

@hipsterelectron i think he's getting swarmed and glorified. he really always was. and as a nerd, i know that swarms of nerd-admirers do way too much of what geniuses say. they become idols, like Einstein (who was less vain, I think).

@hipsterelectron yes, but then I think of the "bomb letter", and if the bootlickers get TT to endorse too much weapons buffoonery, it might actually happen.
