I keep asking, where are the works? Where is the software that does ten or twenty or a hundred times more? Where is the human needs that are ten or twenty or a hundred times better met?
Instead, we have the mandated code generators feeding uncomprehended text into integration pipelines hit testing for textual correctness without meaning.
This is a machine that turns strings into waste heat. That's nearly all it is. It is money on fire.
Peter Drucker once famously said that the only metrics that matter to a business come from outside the business.
A successful restaurant has some number of humans who've left fed and happy. A successful hospital takes in patients and healthy people walk out. Every internal number a business produces for itself might be informative or useful but does not ultimately matter.
Whenever I see companies spouting about their internal metrics like they're proud of them, I think, bluntly: who cares?
If I told you - you, an engineer, you a scientist, you a normal person navigating a normal life this difficult world with some normal degree of competence and grace - that "my factory is taking in fifteen times as much raw material it was last year, but it is not putting out any more of my widgets, and the machines are becoming more unreliable every day, so my plan is to build more and larger factories so I can take in more raw materials"...

But, I would reply, look at how hard everyone is working in my factory, how much harder they are working than this time last year. So much raw material is coming in to be shelved and stored, my machinists are rushing about heroically, oiling machines today and putting out fires on the ones oiled yesterday, our floors are covered with the milled scraps piled so high, everyone helps to sweep them aside or walks around them, look at how we are all working so hard, how we are all working so hard...
