Underground, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are leaving the front lines, exhausted and traumatized by this war that has dragged on for four years. Deserters or those absent without authorization, more than 250,000 have slipped away from the front since 2022 (nearly one in five soldiers currently engaged in the war).
For these escapees, there are few options: live in hiding or leave the country illegally. Many choose to flee via an unprecedented route, through the mountains and the Carpathians, heading for Romania. On foot, risking their lives, they cross these rugged mountains in the snow, searching for freedom far from the war. Some never complete the journey—there have already been 23 deaths in four years in these mountains—while others find refuge in Romania and elsewhere in Europe.
