The recent adoption of gen-ai into #solarpunk has really started to sour me on the genre.
I'm 100% into solarpunk ideas, but using gen-ai sure isn't one of them.
@Longplay_Games I am curious what example you have seen of this lately. I have seen one or two, but certainly not enough to be representative of the genre.
@ravelin I'll try to grab a few from my recent blocklist...
@ravelin So here's the one my local PBS station is running:

Another recent example from a publisher posted by a writer:
@ravelin Trying to dig around in my history for more, but I tend to block and move on, which is a little challenging :D
@Longplay_Games I see! I 100% agree. Attaching gen AI to your creative work is completely off-putting regardless of genre, but it is particularly tone deaf for solarpunk!
@Longplay_Games - Going to push back on some things, but ultimately in support of you.
1) Solarpunk is not a monoloth. It hasn't "adopted" gen-ai
2) Folks try to push gen-ai on a lot of things
3) Folks have tried to push gen-ai on solarpunk from the beginning
4) There is SUCH a heavy pushback against gen-ai ESPECIALLY in #solarPunk.
5) Every idea becomes co-opted and no idea is pure. You can advocate and push for the elements of solarpunk you like and call out and criticize the orhers. If you drop every movement that isnt pure you'll never have a movement (plus that standard makes it really easy to sabotage your movements)
All of that said, I completely agree with your premise. Gen-AI is trash. Gen-AI has no place in solarpunk.
@tinker @Longplay_Games seconding this - about the only interaction I see between solarpunk communities and LLM slop is aggressive pushback. Granted I don't spend time on Instagram or tiktok or most of the big corporate social media, so it might be different there. But at least the subreddit, lemmy instance, various discords, and Mastodon scene all seem to hate AI. If anything the 'adoption' - really an attempt to co-opt the aesthetics and drain it of message - goes the other way.
@jacobcoffin @tinker I've seen no fewer than 3 different solarpunk editors/authors using genai headers in the last couple weeks.
I agree with both of you that the acts of these publishers and authors is not the 'entire genre', and you are correct.
Block and report is probably the correct path forward on this, but it's feeling overwhelming when even my local PBS station is running genai slop.
@Longplay_Games @jacobcoffin - Yeah that's trash and thank you for pushing back on it.
@Longplay_Games surely genai is the antithesis of solarpunk
@primm @Longplay_Games - it is. And following the hashtag on here shows so many people calling it out every week
